Questions for Audioconference 1

Questions from St Alban's School
  1. I wonder when you use echo-sounding to measure the depth of the ocean what frequency works best? How deep can echo-sounding measure?
  2. Have there been any earthquakes and other things that have changed the land (above and below the water)? Does that mean you have to make new maps?
  3. What are the names of the instruments you use to make the maps? How do they work? Do you use computers to make maps or draw them by hand?
  4. Would you use the same techniques to find missing objects on the sea floor as you would to measure it (for example planes or boats)? What is the strangest thing you have ever found?
  5. Do you have map proofreaders to make sure you haven’t made any mistakes? What happens if you make a mistake?

  1. Francie: How many layers can there be on a GIS map?
  2. Dylan: How long has the use of GIS been around and what were the first purposes it was used for?
  3. Annika: We followed the Godzone Race in our Maths class. In this race how would they have transferred the information about each team’s location onto their website?
  4. Thomas: If someone was lost and they tried to use their GPS but something was blocking the signal, what could they do?
  5. We watched a video of GNS Science putting GPS on the top of Aoraki/Mount Cook. Why did they use two GPS trackers? Was it because one could get damaged?
  6. Elijah: How long have satellites been around and are there different types of satellites?

  1. Chelsea - How do Kiwi Rail use GIS for their rail system?
  2. Nadia - If there is a problem with the trains in peak hour, what information does the GIS give to help solve the issue?
  3. Grace - is GIS used for all train systems in New Zealand? If so, where is the central point or are they not linked?
  4. Cassandra - Who is responsible for solving any issues with trains for Kiwi Rail - what is their job?

  1. Can you tell us about a rescue you have done and the technology you used? Is it stressful or exciting? What is the hardest life flight mission you have done?
  2. Is it easier to use V.F.R. or I.F.R.? When do you use each? Do you use autopilot in planes and helicopters?
  3. Are there special places to land your planes? If so, how do you find them? Do you have special tools to help you?
  4. How do you know if there has been an accident that you need to go to?
  5. How do you navigate a plane in bad weather, like a snow storm or in big winds? Is it hard to rescue or help people then?

  1. Max - Is there new technology coming out all the time to help you, such as drones? If so how are they used?
  2. Ty - When aircraft are on very long flights, how do you calculate the time, amount of fuel and weight you can carry?
  3. Jessica - What special training is required to be in the Life Flight Trust?
  4. Tony - Are GPS systems in NZ used at all airports in NZ? We are thinking of the smaller airports such as Kerikeri and Kaitaia.
  5. Royston - Is the Life Flight Trust responsible for coordinating all rescue teams together in case of an emergency requiring land, sea and air support?
